The lower south facing slopes of the Pend-d’Oreille River valley contain unusual ecosystems and species. The area has not previously been studied from an insect perspective – organisms that represent the greatest percentage of species level biodiversity. One group of insects – butterflies –is relatively well known taxonomically and amenable to recreational observation by non-specialists. This study opens the door on the "biodiversity central" of the British Columbia butterfly world.
